GTA V Main Characters’ Backstories
Trevor Phillips
Trevor Phillips grew up in a very troubled home. His mother was abusive and cruel. This made Trevor unpredictable and violent yet he always wanted her approval. Even small insults about his mother could make him lash out. Before meeting Michael, Trevor wandered near the Canadian border. He had recently left the military, committed petty crimes, ran a small air freight business and was already skilled at flying planes. He first met Michael during a dangerous job moving illegal cargo.
Even though it was violent the two connected. Michael introduced him to professional heists, giving Trevor direction and purpose. Nine years before GTA 5, Trevor, Michael, and Brad Snyder attempted a bank robbery in Ludendorff, North Yankton. It was a setup. Michael faked his death, Brad was killed, and Trevor believed Michael was dead. For the next nine years, Trevor ran Trevor Phillips Enterprises in Sandy Shores, dealing in meth and illegal weapons. He fought rival gangs including the Lost MC, the O’Neals, the Aztecs, and the Chung Triad, often violently.
His life changed when he saw Michael on TV during a robbery. Their reunion was explosive, filled with anger, betrayal and old loyalty. Trevor is ambitious, loyal, and dangerous, caring deeply for his friends and surrogate family. By the canon ending he is wealthier, connected, and protected but his wild nature remains.
Franklin Clinton
Franklin Clinton was born in Los Santos in 1988. He lost both parents early in life and was raised by his grandmother. From a young age he fell into petty crime with his best friend Lamar Davis. He spent time in juvenile detention which exposed him more to street life. Franklin’s talent for driving set him apart from his peers. He worked for luxury car dealer Simeon, repossessing vehicles which is how he met Michael. Michael recognized his potential and became his mentor showing him how to plan serious heists.
Franklin stayed calm, loyal and smart under pressure. He became a key member of the crew for major jobs including the Jewel Store Job, Merryweather heist, Paleto Bay score and the Union Depository heist. Despite rising in status, he stayed connected to his old neighborhood and sometimes had to manage conflicts with Lamar. In the Death Wish ending, Franklin refuses to betray either Michael or Trevor. Instead, he works with both to eliminate all their enemies.
After a few years, Franklin builds F. Clinton & Partner, a celebrity solutions business. He employs Lamar and even his dog Chop in security work, combining street smarts with professional success. His journey shows determination, loyalty and growth from small-time hustler to influential power player.
Michael De Santa
Michael De Santa, born Michael Townley grew up in the Midwest. He was smart, careful and talented at planning. He started with petty crime and worked his way into major heists. Michael preferred structure and strategy which made his partnership with Trevor, who was impulsive and chaotic, both powerful and dangerous. He married Amanda and had two children, Jimmy and Tracy but family life was tense and unhappy. Michael wanted to leave crime while keeping his wealth.
He made a secret deal with FIB agent Dave Norton. During the Ludendorff heist, Michael faked his death, Brad went to prison and Trevor thought Michael was dead. Michael lived under witness protection in Rockford Hills enjoying comfort but also feeling bored and unfulfilled. Meeting Franklin brought him back into crime, working with Trevor and Franklin on high-stakes heists. Michael also pursued personal goals outside crime, including working with Vinewood producer Solomon Richards to make films.
His life constantly balanced loyalty to his friends, protecting his family and maintaining deals with the FIB. By the end of GTA 5, Michael’s family life stabilizes, he continues his film work, and his bonds with Franklin and Trevor remain intact. His story is one of ambition, betrayal, loyalty and learning to manage the consequences of a life in crime.
