GTA 5 Sea

If there is one thing almost everyone can agree on it is that GTA 5 can look absolutely stunning. Whether you are wandering through dense forests, cruising down highways or exploring the busy streets of Los Santos the game rarely fails to keep you completely immersed. A big part of this immersion comes from the small details. From hearing broken glass crunch under your feet, to seeing flip-flops actually flip and flop while you walk, or even watching a paramedic attempt to revive someone you may have recently… well, you get the idea.

These tiny details might seem insignificant, but together they create the illusion of a living, breathing world. Yet, there is one place in the game that is often overlooked despite the incredible attention to detail, the ocean. Vast, deep, and mysterious, the waters of Los Santos hide wrecks, secrets, and easter eggs that many players never notice. Let us dive into some of the most fascinating underwater discoveries.

The ocean in GTA V is littered with airplane wrecks, each with its own story. Just west of the military base, you can find a crashed cargo plane. The front half of the plane broke off during impact and landed a good distance away from the main wreckage. It resembles a Soviet Antonov An-124, and given its proximity to Fort Zancudo along with the presence of weapons scattered around, it is likely this plane had a failed takeoff or mission gone wrong.

Off the coast of Paleto Bay, another large airliner rests on the sea floor. This plane resembles a Boeing 747 and appears relatively new, with little corrosion or coral growth. Surprisingly, there is no mention of this crash anywhere in the game’s media, making it a mysterious and unexplained wreck. Next, near Mount Gordo, you can spot a small crop duster. This aircraft, similar to a Stearman PT17, has been underwater for a long time.

Oddly, it is far from any farmland. Weapons such as shotguns, pistols, and sticky bombs are scattered around it, suggesting it may have been used for smuggling. Despite theories, this is not the same plane Trevor uses in the mission Minor Turbulence, as it still has both wings intact. East of the Port of Los Santos lies another sunken airliner. Its corroded hull and coral-covered surfaces indicate it has been underwater for a long time. Weapons are scattered around, and bullet-shaped holes in the cockpit suggest it may have been hijacked or shot down.

Finally, in the middle of the Alamo Sea, you can discover a Merryweather cargo plane. This plane was shot down during the story mission Minor Turbulence and is packed with weapons, including machine guns, sniper rifles, RPGs, grenade launchers, and even a high-tech railgun. These plane wrecks give a sense of history and danger lurking beneath the ocean surface.

It also features several sunken ships. There are three identical tugboats scattered across different parts of the map. Each has a large hole in its hull, likely the reason it sank. While they are mostly copy-pasted models, they still add realism to the ocean environment. East of the Palomino Highlands, a massive cargo ship rests underwater. Parts of the ship lie hundreds of yards away from the main wreck, and it seems far too large to have safely navigated the shallow waters it now rests in. It likely collided with the sea floor, causing it to sink.

South of Alamo Sea, another decrepit shipwreck is covered in rust and clearly has been underwater for years. Among its remains, you can spot a tank and other heavy military weapons, suggesting this was either a battleship or a cargo ship carrying military equipment. There is also a massive side-wheeled paddle steamer, known as a sidewheeler. While nothing particularly exciting can be found around it, it is massive, comparable to the American Queen, one of the largest river steamboats ever built.

Beyond wrecks, the ocean hides strange and mysterious objects. Off the coast of Pacific Bluffs, a strange structure sits on the ocean floor. Some speculate it is a dark submarine, others think it might be an underwater research lab or even an oil rig. Its true purpose remains a mystery. West of Banham Canyon, a whale skeleton rests on the seabed. Some players have speculated it could be a sea monster, but it is actually just the remains of a whale. Near Mount Chiliad, a crashed UFO sits underwater.

Unlike other UFOs in the game, this one shows no signs of damage, suggesting it may have lost power rather than being shot down. East of Chumash, an underwater graveyard is visible. This is a subtle reference to the real-world Osborne Reef disaster in 2007, when tires were placed underwater to expand reefs but instead caused environmental damage. North of Mount Gordo, a sunken nuclear submarine can be found. Its design is reminiscent of World War II submarines, and it is likely that it sank after colliding with the sea floor.

Southeast of Humane Labs, a debris field contains multiple military vehicles from different eras, including tanks, semi-trucks, and unexploded missiles. This has led to speculation that the United States military used this area to dump unwanted or outdated equipment. Nearby, a mysterious hatch references the TV show Lost. Approaching it plays a message that, when decoded, is a nod to Roman from GTA 4 asking the player to go bowling, a subtle Easter egg for longtime fans.

Finally, north of Paleto Bay, eight corpses are scattered across small islands. These are believed to be victims of the Infinity 8 killer, Mel Abrahams, who committed the murders in 1999. The bodies were never fully recovered, making this one of the darker secrets hidden underwater.

The underwater world in GTA 5 is full of hidden stories, strange artifacts, and eerie mysteries. From plane wrecks to military debris, from sunken ships to UFOs, there is always something new to discover if you take the time to explore. It adds an entirely different layer to the game, reminding players that Los Santos is more than just its streets and highways. It is a living, breathing world with secrets lurking even below the waves.
